Chapter Seven

DELAYED

Adam pulled out his cell phone and snapped photos of the evidence around the window and fire escape. He leaned out the window and took photos of the footprints too.

Adam paused. There was only one set of footprints. This meant that there was only one person on the fire escape. Could the killer have carried The Witch all the way up here just to stuff her in the wardrobe? Who was strong enough to carry her up six flights of stairs in the snow? More importantly, why would he do that? Something was missing.

In spite of these questions, Adam felt there was at least enough evidence to clear his mom’s name. She hadn’t been anywhere near the stairs or the fire escape. She had been waiting for them in their apartment the whole time. His mom didn’t have the chance to do something as horrible as kill The Witch. Besides, she wasn’t strong enough to carry someone all the way up the fire escape. It was ridiculous to even suspect her.

Excited, Adam ran back down the stairs. He would show his photos to the police and prove his mom’s innocence. He was about to take the elevator but didn’t want to risk the curse trapping him in the elevator again. His heart raced as his feet flew down the steps. But as he ran through the building’s front door, he ran right into Mrs. Ko and her groceries.
